How to obtain a residence permit in Portugal

Foreign citizens are allowed to apply for a residence permit in Portugal and ask for a family reunion.

A residence permit is granted to a foreign citizen:

  • Certificate of registration and residence for nationals of the E.U. / E.E.E. / Andorra / Switzerland and their families
  • Minors, born in Portugal, children of foreign citizens with residence
  • Minors, born in Portugal, who have stayed here and who are attending pre-school education, basic, secondary or professional education
  • Individuals who suffer from an illness that requires prolonged medical care that prevents them from returning to the country, in order to avoid risk to their own health
  • Individuals who have not been absent from the national territory and whose right of residence has expired
  • Individuals who have minors children residing in Portugal or with Portuguese nationality over whom they effectively exercise parental authority and to whom they ensure their livelihood and education
  • Individuals who, having benefited from a residence permit for studying, and having completed their studies, intend to carry out a professional activity, subordinate or independent
  • Individuals who, having benefited from a temporary stay visa for research or highly qualified activities and intend to carry out a research activity, a teaching activity in a higher education institution or highly qualified, subordinate or independent, in the national territory
